The Taunton River Greenway flows for approximately 40 miles from the confluence of the Town and Matfield Rivers in the Towns of Bridgewater and continues through the towns of Halifax, Middleboro, Raynham, City of Taunton, Towns of Dighton, Berkley and Freetown to the confluence of Mt. Hope Bay at the City of Fall River and Town of Somerset.

In one of his final letters, the late Representative Joseph Moakley wrote, "It is my hope that the study that will be conducted over the next three years will in fact determine that the Taunton River should be designated as a Wild and Scenic River. I cannot think of another river in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts that captures the magnificence of New England better than the Taunton River."
